UMMA’s Earth Day
UMMA’s aim on Earth Day and every day is to create a healthier community with healthier homes. Here in South Central Los Angeles where access to public green space is severely limited, the Fremont Wellness Center and Community Garden created in partnership with the LA Land Trust, LAUSD and John C. Fremont High School have become a healthy gathering place for the community.
This Earth Day the Community Garden was a fitting location for the start of a weekend full of events. There, UMMA launched it’s weekend of outreach with an Earth Day Fair on Friday, then moved to Bethune Middle School for a health fair on Saturday, and participated in another health fair at St. Raphael School on Sunday.
Naked Juice sponsored Friday’s fair, giving bottles of fruit and vegetable packed pressed juices and smoothies to attendees in lieu of sugary beverages. On Saturday the celebration continued! Volunteers from UCLA’s School of Dentistry provided free screenings and cleanings to students at Bethune Middle School, and free screenings to non-students.
Sunday’s Health Fair at St. Raphael School was a huge success thanks to the wonderful volunteers, community organizations, and vendors who made it happen. With about 300 people in attendance, health screenings were facilitated by UMMA’s Dr. Abdelrahman with the help of volunteers from UCLA. Attendees were given health and wellness education and free health services, as well as healthy food.
Upwards of 500 lives were touched via our outreach this weekend alone, and it was possible because of the generous support of our donors, the hard work and dedication of our Student Health Leaders, and our volunteers who donated their time and expertise to help touch the lives of others. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for making it possible.
